:: PERSONALITY ::
Sam's smile tends to brighten up any room he finds himself in. He is very social but remains down to Earth. His southern accent works in his favor when telling the many stories accumulated through years of living in unusually exciting life. He remains the salt-of-the-Earth as his brief stint in the world of crime has helped definitively define the important from the unimportant. Sam tries to look on the bright side of life, always smiling and refusing the world's negativity to bring him down. He keeps his feelings within, only opening up to those he trusts.
He is friendly but is quite capable of being a nemesis. Hurt his friends or family and he is known to go off the deep end. He is very much a family man, looking to start one of his own. He is well rooted to the ground he steps on and he will never turn his back on anyone. He is giving and charitable, often times willing to hand off the shirt on his back to someone in need.
While he chooses to follow a leader, he is often times seen blurring the lines between follower and leader. Almost unknowingly, he takes the reigns and begins barking orders, seeing a solution where many would see a problem. This has also been known to get him in trouble as he is stubborn when it comes to certain directions.
He has strong feelings against humans against mutants but that belief is not delegated to just that. His feelings towards hate in general usually fuel his drive and motivation to try and change their ways of thinking. Growing up in a backwater town, he has seen racism and segregation firsthand and knows that old thinking must be burned away from the Earth.

:: MUTATION ::
- :: Thermo-Chemical Energy ::
Cannonball's body builds up Thermo-Chemical Energy within and his mutant power allows him to secrete it through his skin for various effects, the main one being the ability to soar through the air at jet speeds. The combustion of the lower region of his body propels him into the air where, with the sheer act of will, he moves with considerable maneuverability at great heights and high speeds. It has been said that at his height of power he is capable of leveling city blocks by plummeting to the Earth and creating an explosive shock wave upon landing.- :: Blast Field ::
The second most useful side effect of his mutation is a blast field that surrounds his body and protects him from bodily harm. The shield is impenetrable and virtually indestructible. He is also able to extend his field to encompass others nearby but they must remain close. While enclosed within they are unable to escape, which also comes in handy when trapping a foe. The field remains until he wills it away or he runs out of energy. However, it is able to absorb outside kinetic attacks to replenish his energy supply.- :: Explosive Shock Wave ::
Over the years, Sam has developed a way to expel all of his energy at once, creating an explosive shock wave, much like that which proceeds the detonation of a nuclear bomb, that will level his surroundings. He refrains from using this as it will eliminate both friendlies and foes alike and do considerable damage to the environment.
Cannonball secretes Thermo-Chemical Energy cultivated within his body through his skin. It then encompasses his body in an unseen aura that creates a Blast Field. This Blast Field works as an impenetrable shield as it protects him, and anybody he chooses to encompass within, from bodily harm. The strength of his shield remains a mystery but it is said that as long as his energy reserves are up and running, the shield will remain nearly invulnerable to any form of physical attack. It is also capable of absorbing kinetic attacks, which in turn replenish his energy reserves. The release of this energy also works to propel him through the sky at jet-like high speeds. His legs and feet combust into an explosive tail of smoke and fire, thrusting him into the sky where, with will alone, he controls the height and speed at his discretion. While propelling through the sky, the blast field works to protect him from his own mutant power. Cannonball has also developed the ability to use the blast field to increase the bludgeoning power of his blows and is even able to create minor explosive shock waves by simply punching the floor. A more powerful and more deadly shock wave can be created should he choose to release all of his energy at once, a move he refrains from using as it only destroys..
His Thermo-Chemical Energy, like fuel, does run the risk of running out as his body could only produce so much. He has ways of keeping enough stored or even replenishing but the risk remains. Should he use up his energy reserves, he would become winded and slow down considerably, possibly passing out in the process. He has an inner gauge that keeps him well informed as to what he can or can't do and although he's never really encountered this during battle, it is a possibility that his mutant power could just shut down in the midst of confrontation. His shield is able to absorb any physical attack or kinetic attack but as is with anything, a big enough blow could disable him for a while. He is, however, susceptible to mental attacks. Should he be k.o.ed during battle, his Blast Field immediately dissipates.
"Living from day to day, moving from place to place, with no memory of who or what you are."
:: History ::
Samuel Zachery Guthrie was born in Cumberland County, Kentucky to Lucinda and Thomas Guthrie and soon after, the family quickly grew. He eventually became the eldest born of ten siblings. His childhood was quite normal for anybody growing up in the south. There was the normal amount of bigotry mixed with old thinking, however, papa and mama Guthrie raised their children to think outside the tight confines of the Cumberland County box and this open minded view of the world allowed Sam the freedom to excel in every aspect of his young life.
The Guthries were a coal Mining family. Which meant meek wages for hard work. While they got by on slim pickings, they weren't necessarily poor. They were rich with love and as a family they prospered. However, in Sam's eyes, there was always room for improvement. He watched his father and mother struggle as they tried to do what they could for ten children and their struggling was always in the back of his mind. At 5 years old he was already thinking up ways of how to help his family in the future, coming up with ridiculous get rich quick plans that were even more ridiculous coming from the mind of a 5 year old. They usually involved resurrecting dinosaurs. However, this gave Sam the work ethic and heart he has today.
Sam was growing brighter as each day passed and his grades and school accolades kept improving each and every year. He was intelligent and his schemes to get rich began becoming more and more plausible. Some people said that he was the smartest of the bunch, even smarter than Paige but he'd never admit to it for her sake. While a freshman in high school, he gained notoriety as a quarterback for his High School team, a skill he developed at a young age tossing the ball with his dad. His skills on the field were quite impressive, securing some minor and national championships. As a sophomore, universities began offering him scholarships both for his grades but mostly for his ability to pass a football. However, tragedy would strike the family and he would have no choice but to drop out of high school.
After many years of working in the coal mines, Thomas Guthrie contracted the Black Lung. The sickness quickly grabbed hold of him and eventually devastated the family by taking him. Sam, seeing the need for the income his dad brought home, decided to drop out and become a working man. A family friend convinced those in charge to give Sam a job where he became one with the mines and the hopes and dreams of an aspiring football player went up in smokes.
Being a coal miner taught Sam everything he needed to know about hard work. For two years, he would dig in that GOD-awful place to put food on the family's table and never once did he lose his optimistic smile. His get rich schemes were no longer a viable option and he had accepted this life as one he would live for the rest of his. That is until one fateful day everything would change.
The mines collapsed. He was buried under rock and stone with the family friend that got him hired. In an act of emotion, after thinking about what his family would do without him, his latent mutant powers kicked in, encompassing him and his friend as he blew out of the rubble and straight into the sky, carrying both of them to safety.
He became a small town celebrity as a town that was once filled with bigots began to open their minds to the differences of the outside world. Several newspapers and news stations covered the story and eventually one Donald Pierce heard about the young mutant. Donald made his way to Kentucky and had a secret meeting with Sam. He offered him the money necessary to support his large family without any of them having to break their backs with work. Sam agreed to work for Pierce and both set a plan to motion that would deceive his family into believing he was becoming a student at Xavier's, whose name was becoming public knowledge thanks to incidents that occurred at Liberty Island. The family believed him, never having a reason to doubt him, and Sam became Cannonball, an agent of Donald Pierce.
Sam was Donald's muscle, strong-arming anyone into doing what his master commanded. Under Pierce's rule, Sam learned how to command his mutant powers. Self-taught and unaware of how powerful he truly was, he did Pierce's bidding, sending the money earned through nefarious deeds back to his family in Kentucky where they were able to buy a farm. Sam disliked what he had to do to earn that money but he was willing to overlook some minor acts of violence that didn't involve taking a life. That is until Pierce ordered him to take a precious one, Professor X's.
Pierce had decided that Professor X was getting in the way of business and hired the mutant to assassinate him. Sam reluctantly agreed but when it came down to the wire, decided against it. Sam had done his own research and found what Xavier was doing for mutants to be respectable, especially since he found out that Paige recently discovered her own powers and was inquiring about the school. Instead of murdering the professor, he protected the X-Men leader from Pierce's attacks, therefore cutting ties with Pierce. Professor X, seeing the good in Sam, decided to take him on at his school if he agreed to tend to the lands and protect the students from an upcoming war that was brewing.
Xavier agreed to keep Sam's escapades with Pierce a secret, even going as far as ensuring that other students remember Sam as someone that had been there for the amount of time Sam claimed he was just in time for him to welcome Paige to the school. Why he did so remains a secret to this day for a few months later, Xavier would be dead. Sam would assist at the battle at Worthington Labs and would remain at the school for a little time after as a lands keeper but his aging mother would bring him back home. Paige, Jeb and Melody were all students now and his mom needed help so he left the school and went back home to tend to his family's farm, which was bought with the money Pierce paid him.
His affinity for motorcycles came while working with Pierce. He even went as far as to join a motorcycle club where he learned to dismantle them only to build them back from the ground up. He opened up a small garage when he went home to pass the time. He worked part time as a motorcycle mechanic while still ensuring the farm produced enough crops to put food on the table and life went back to being simple. Although the simple life was not something Sam could live with.
Lucinda could tell that her oldest son was not where he was meant to be. Although Sam would remain at her side indefinitely without question, Lucinda begged him to leave to find his true calling in life. The Guthrie siblings were now at home after Xavier's closed and she had more than enough help to keep things running. Reluctantly, Sam agreed to find his way. He'd always known that he was destined for more and the time had come to seek it.
Packing some belongings in a small bag, Sam hopped on his Harley and hit the road, making his way to a place known as District X. Here he would find everything he needed to continue on his path to discovery, eventually ending up among the ranks of X-Force. His years spent in the world of crime had given him some insights into the inner workings of criminals and now he uses them to protect and serve, investigating crimes and murders, waiting for the moment to the save the world.

Sam was laying in his bed, tossing a blue softball at the ceiling and catching it on its return. He had just finished unpacking what little clothes he brought with him when he realized that he would have to go back home for Thanksgiving and packed even less for the return. Not that he minded. It was one of the few times all the Guthries got together and he was eager to give his ma a kiss on the cheek. He also wondered if Mellie would show.
It was late into the evening and Sam was about ready to call it a night when he abruptly sat up. Even this far into the mansion he could still hear and recognize the turning of a particular engine catching. "GOD help dems if that right there is mah bike." The mansion was notorious with teenagers taking owned vehicles out for joyrides. He thought his bike would be safe seeing as none of them would dare touch Logan's but he thought wrong and soon heard his Harley driving off into the night.
He jumped out of his bed and looked out the window just in time to catch the view of some grungy looking dude on the back of his bike as it hit a sharp right out of the driveway, causing a sports car to swerve out of control and nearly hit the school's gate. He cringed a bit before his brow furrowed. He was p**ed and it was apparent he needed to let it be known to the jackasses that stole his ride, even if it was just for the night.
He sat at the edge of his bed and pulled on some blue jeans and black Vans and walked out of his bedroom shirtless and foaming at the mouth. Someone tried to say hi and spark up a conversation but Sam paid them no mind as he rudely brushed passed them without saying a word and headed down the stairs, through the foyer and into the garage. Maybe it ain't what I seen, he thought but as he looked to see if his beauty was still parked where he left it, all he found were burnt tire tracks on the floor.
Angrily, he kicked an empty paint can across the garage that crashed into something unknown and was followed by the echoing sounds of s*** falling. He picked a spot in a corner where there was enough darkness to shroud him and keep him hidden from prying eyes. He plucked a joint that he was carrying on his ear and sparked it, the light from the lighter casting an eery glow on Sam's face. He leaned against the wall and began to wait, hoping that whoever took it would return soon so they could have a conversation about personal belongings. Only his mouth wasn't in a talkative mood...
His fists, however, were eager and had plenty to say.
"Welcome to Mutant High."
