:: PERSONALITY ::
At first glance Mikhail may appear serious in nature. He tends to keep to himself finding it hard to to trust those he doesn't know. His experience in life has shown him just how much differences are taken into account when being judged. His faith in humans is nonexistent as he'd prefer to deal with mutants. In his own mind, he has separated the two like one would a cat from a dog. Not to say he wouldn't interact with them only that he would never rely on them for anything.
Once someone is able to get through his hardened exterior, they will find a boy with the playful spirit of a bear. He can be a vicious predator when pushed but would much prefer a peaceful life out in the wilderness where he can keep to himself. He has been known to wander for hours through the backwoods of Westchester County in his bear form, choosing to keep a distance from the rest of the students who he feels awkward talking to as he has only recently started learning English.
There is a need inside of Mikhail that longs for family. After the tragedy that befell his birth parents, he has felt lost and alone. Being at Xavier's surrounded by others like him has helped him cope but the loneliness that comes from being the last in his family's line remains. He often tends to hide his depression through unfunny jokes and annoying pranks as showing off his true feelings would be letting others in and he's yet to find out how much of a family the X-Men truly are.
He finds the life of a mutant, any mutant, to be hard so he is always up for helping others in need. As long as they are mutants. Humans in need would have to take a little convincing. He understands what it means to be an X-Men but has yet to fully accept their ideals. Mutants and humans are two different classes and sometimes Mikhail feels as the relationship between them is unnecessary. He tries to avoid liking Magneto's ideals but after hearing the stories and rumors about the man's vision he can't help but feel as though maybe he is right.
Mikhail is young and strong and at times hardheaded but those that stand by his side he would ferociously protect. He can be territorial with the institute when it comes to newcomers but his "hazing" is mostly to see what he can and can't get away with with a particular newb but mostly to ensure they aren't hiding any secrets. This of course tends to get him in trouble but he remains vigilante of freshman nonetheless. Without the institute, Mikhail would still be roaming the frozen Siberian tundras as a bear, hiding from a government that sought to either kill or take advantage of the boy. He is grateful and respectful to teachers and staff but can come off strong at times.
His mutation has also afforded him a certain closeness with the wild. There is something freeing to wander around as a bear without chains to bind you. This freedom is very personal to him and the reasoning for his claustrophobia. Although not as potent a fear compared to those that actually deal with the phobia, Mikhail can be seen fidgeting and moving about, staring out windows and wanting the fresh air on his face, both human and fur.
Although he had to grow up at an early age, which comes off in his serious demeanor, he is still very much a boy who is always looking to have fun, as can be seen by his jokes and pranks. Mikhail, a boy with no country or family, is still very much searching for a place to belong...
Hoping dearly that Xavier's dream is one he can share in...
But also keeping Magneto's vision in the back of his mind.
"You're not the only one with gifts."
:: MUTATION ::
- :: PHYSICAL TRANSFORMATION ::
Balshoy Medvyed was the nickname given to Mikhail in his home country. It translates to "Great Bear" which is in regards to his mutant gift. A gift that allows him to transform into a 7'5, 955 pound anthropomorphic brown bear. While mutated he retains his ability to speak and his human intellect along with some rather nifty superhuman traits. While Mikhail could spend hours wandering the woods as a muscular brown bear codenamed Ursa Major, a name he picked to honor his deceased mother, it remains unknown how long he can remain in this furry form. The longer he does, the less human and more feral he becomes.
Along with the likeness he also picks up overpowered bear traits. His sense of smell is highly acute able to pick up and track scents that had been weathered down by time and mother nature to an impressively successful degree.
Though rather large, he can still bound freely at 35 miles per hour with the superhuman reflexes and bodily coordinated agility that could match any Olympic level athlete. His musculature produces low levels of fatigue toxins that allow him to exert himself at peak capacity for several hours before finally becoming winded.
Ursa Major's skin also hardens with his mutation meaning he can take considerable damage and is resistant to certain injuries. He can withstand great falls several stories high and could be struck with superhuman force that would normally kill a man with little to no impact on his hide.
However, the greatest compliment to his size and girth comes in the form of superhuman strength as he can benchpress 15 tons without breaking a sweat. He has dull claws at the end of his paws that when mixed with his strength become devastating weapons.
When Ursa Major powers down to Mikhail, he keeps some of these traits but not to the degree the bear possesses. He is rather normal as human with a just above average speed, agility, stamina and strength. He is as durable as the next human and runs just as fast as a fast one. Being caught in his human form is his greatest weakness.
"Living from day to day, moving from place to place, with no memory of who or what you are."
:: History ::
The Russian government is not exactly known for its kindness towards those that are born different. Most mutants that were found to possess gifts were immediately executed as they were deemed threats to their national security. Mikhail's father was among those tasked with such a gruesome act. A military man with an emphatic love for his homeland would never question orders because in doing so he would be questioning his loyalty and Mikhail's father was such a man. That is until he had a son of his own with his lovely wife.
Mikhail Uriokovitch Ursus was born in Blagoveshchensk, Russia, a region that was particularly against human evolution as was evident by public executions of young children whose powers just manifested. Mikhail was born to share in those beliefs and for most of his young life he lived in the strict home of a military family. For the most part life wasn't so bad. Mikhail grew up a normal boy going to a normal school learning normal things. Other than the hateful mongering he was exposed to, life was good.
He had a great deal of respect for his father, who taught him how to keep in shape and fight, and love for his mother, who would show him the stars nightly naming out constellations to fulfill his curiosity; Her favorite being Ursa Major. He would grow up to find a wife like ma and be a soldier like his pa. The simple plans of a future for a young boy that would never get to realize his dreams.
Puberty came and with it a great deal of hair in awkward places... Or in Mikhail's case, fur. One morning he woke up to find himself staring in the mirror at a brown bear. Without knowing what to do, he trampled about the house, destroying everything before running out into town. His neighbors and many others got to witness as he demolished everything in his way in a panic while he attempted to get a handle of what was going on. More importantly they witnessed him revert back to the son of a man paid to kill his kind.
It wasn't long before his father was given the orders to execute his own son. While loyal to Mother Russia, he was more loyal to his family. He would do everything in his power to protect his kin even turn his back on his certain loyalties. Refusal of orders condemned the entire Ursus clan to death. It wasn't long before a murder squad knocked down their door, shooting both the mother and father before setting their sights on the young boy. Hiding under his bed he got a front seat view of the tragedy and with so much emotion, he transformed once again. This time with a more enraged feral kind of mind.
Bullets flew and blood was shed and at the end of it all, a giant brown bear was seen slipping off into the forested area that surrounded Blagoveshchensk. For the next couple of years, Mikhail would remain as a bear for as long as he could, only reverting back to human when supplies were needed. A fugitive on the run, Mikhail traveled throughout Russia, alone and frightened. He taught himself how to control his mutant gift and eventually came across a gypsy wagon that doubled as a circus.
He kept his mutation in line and simply came across their camp as a bear. The gypsies were immediately frightened but eventually noticed that he wasn't like any bear. This one was different, smart and looked to have a soul in his eyes. They believed they had found a spirit and adopted him, "training" him to do tricks although Mikhail was simply following directions because he was playing the part. When no one was looking, he would revert back to human and enjoy life as a young boy. As much as a young fugitive who watched his parents murdered in front of him could.
Eventually, the traveling circus ended up in Westchester, New York. Once out of Russia, Mikhail knew it was time to reveal a new trick to his gypsy friends. Shocked as they were they were not hateful towards him. They listened to his story and agreed that it was time he found a new home and clothed him, gave him a few bucks and sent him on his way, pointing him towards the direction of a school that had recently re-opened.
Mikhail now finds himself surrounded by several youngsters like him after living for many years thinking he was the only one. He remembers the hate humans are capable of and because of this he holds a darkness in him that continues to fester. He attempts to ignore these feelings by finding new joys in a school that has plenty to offer but even he wonders if this is the place for him.
For now, it was good.
